A "Bois Noirci" tea box with painted porcelain bottles - Napoleon III - Brass, Ebony, Porcelain, Bois Noircia - 1850-1870

[ translate ]

This tea box was made in France during the Napoleon III period, circa 1850-1870. The tea box is made from a light wood, glued on the outside with blackened pear veneer and on the inside with veneers of a golden-yellow wood, presumably birch. The tea box is richly decorated with marquetery of engraved brass in curled flower & leaf motifs and details of blue shellac & red cellulose/imitation turtle. And there are details of refined brass piping and the lid is lined with ebony decorative edges. On the inside are two porcelain bottles which are decorated very refined with various curled flower & leaf motifs, both in colour and gold. Through years of use, the golden details have become somewhat worn. Both bottles have been broken in the past, re-glued and small pieces are missing from the neck. Also, one of the stoppers is missing a chip fro the bottom. The tea box still has its original brass hinges, lock plate and lock, a working key is unfortunately missing. The tea box has a beautiful sheen from the authentic wax finish, which makes the chic contrast of the black and the colours stand out very well! The object will be well packaged for registered shipping!
