A CAUCASIAN SHORTSWORD (KINDJAL), THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY

with broad double-edged blade tapering to a sharp point and formed with a pair of long broad fullers divided by a pair of slender grooves on each face, the fullers etched in imitation of fine watering, grooved forte struck with the bladesmith's mark and with a lengthy gold inscription on each face, integral hilt decorated with gold wriggle-work, with a nielloed silver ferrule decorated with scrolling foliage and with fine beadwork at the base, and fitted with a pair of horn grip-scales (small cracks) retained by three rivets with large shaped nielloed silver bosses on the front, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts en suite with the hilt, comprising locket, middle-band struck with a mark and with a loop for suspension and chape with characteristic spherical terminal, and with provision for an accompanying knife (now missing)

46.5 cm; 18 1/4 in blade

The inscription is Armenian and an abbreviation of The Lord's Prayer.
