A CAUCASIAN SHORTSWORD (KINDJAL), THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY
with broad double-edged blade tapering to a sharp point, formed with a pair of long broad fullers etched in imitation of fine watering and enriched with gold scrollwork along the edges at the forte and towards the tip on each face, integral hilt decorated with scrolling gold foliage (small losses), fitted with a pair of dark horn grip-scales (the inner with light worm damage), retained by three iron rivets with gilt heads, encased at the base and over the outer face in nielloed silver with a delicate beadwork border, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts en suite with the hilt, comprising locket and chape each decorated on the outer face with geometric designs, the former with an iron band fitted with a silver ring for suspension (chape missing its finial) and with provision for an accompanying knife (now missing)
