[ translate ]

Qianlong

Qianlong
The fine five-lobed body carved with panels of scholars and sages and their attendants within mountainous landscapes, all reserved on a ground of scrolling lotus and acanthus leaves, supported on bracket feet, the gilt-decorated brown-lacquered stand with a shaped apron with floral designs in gilt, supported by scrolling cabriole legs with ruyi terminals. The jardinière 21.2cm (8 3/8in) wide. (2).

Provenance:
Parry Collection, London, and thence by descent

Each of the five lobes is decorated with a cartouche enclosing a figural landscape scene. These include a figure of a sage followed by an attendant carrying a branch of lingzhi fungi, two scenes of sages with boys each carrying a large peach, a sage with a boy carrying a flower basket, and a sage with a boy carrying books. The peach and lingzhi represent the wish for longevity, the flower basket may be related to the Daoist Immortal Lan Caihe. To vary each scene, the carver used different trees to frame the landscapes, including pine, paulownia and eucalyptus.

A related five-lobed carved cinnabar lacquer jardinière, Qing dynasty, is in the collection of the the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Compare with a pair of carved cinnabar lacquer six-lobed jardinières and wood stands, Qianlong, but decorated with 'boys at play', which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 October 2003, lot 786.
