A Chelsea-Derby part dessert service, circa 1770

painted and gilt with berried laurel festoons, trophies and centred by classical urns, comprising: a large lozenge-shaped dish, 32.5cm. wide, 12 3/4 in., a pair of two-handled tureens and covers, a pair of kidney-shaped dishes, a pair of shaped octagonal bowls, a scalloped dish and six plates, gold anchor and D marks

Condition Report:
Overall in good condition. a large lozenge-shaped dish: generally good order but with some wear to the gilt rims and foot rims. a pair of two-handled tureens and covers, each 19cm. wide: one finial broken and re-stuck. Some slight rubbing to gilding and a small surface chip to the edge of the undamaged cover. a pair of kidney-shaped dishes, 26.8cm. wide: generally in good condition with only slight glaze scratches and rubbing to the rims. One example has a small tear to the paste and glazed over footrim chip, but from the time of manufacture. a pair of shaped octagonal bowls, 22.2cm. wide: one is quite thickly potted and has four small rim chips. the other example has one minor rim chip, two surface chips and a foot rim chip. Both with light rubbing to gilding and minor scratches. a scalloped dish, 22.5cm. wide : overall in good order but with three minor foot rim chips and slight rubbing to gilding six plates, 21.5cm. diameter: One has a large section to the rim broken and riveted in five sections and a faint hairline crack. Another one with a large surface rim chip at 12 o'clock and a further example with a smaller rim chip at 7 o'clock. The other three are generally in good order. Slight variation in the thickness of the potting and form.

Provenance:
Probably Douglas Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton (1756–1799) who succeeded his brother, the 7th Duke around the time of manufacture of the present lot;
