A Chinese Export mother-of-pearl inlaid black lacquer tea chest, circa 1840

of octagonal form with a hinged lid and large engraved tin lidded tea caddy, lined with red paper, some losses
29cm. high; 37.5cm. wide, 26.5cm. deep; 11½in., 1ft. 2¾in., 10½in.

Condition Report:
Losses to some inlaid mother-of-pearl, notably to lid. Chips to lacquered surface and some later 'blackening' at these sites to disguise losses. Some of the lacquered surface is discolored and faded from sun. Chips, marks and scratches from age and use, particularly when the materials employed are considered. The gilt-handles to each side are tarnished. The interior canister lifts-out and there are some old marks and scratches and some separations to the edges of the top.
