A Chinese blue and white 'Fu Shou Kang Ning' bowl, Wanli, dated 1617

Finely potted with gently rounded sides rising from a neatly finished foot ring, the bowl is painted in underglaze cobalt blue on the exterior with a continuous scrolling floral vine, interrupted by four lozenge-shaped panels formed by overlapping squares. Each panel encloses one of the auspicious characters fu, shou, kang, and ning, together conveying the blessing, "Good fortune, longevity, health, and peace." The interior is centred with a lotus medallion enclosed within a double circle, a broad band of cockscomb scrolls and a narrow cell-diaper border below the rim.
The base bears the unusual four-character cyclical inscription dingsi nian zao ("made in the dingsi year"), corresponding to 1617 during the reign of the Wanli Emperor (1573-1620)
