A Chinese blue and white ‘Transitional’ vase
Of bottle form with tall slender neck interrupted by a bulb below the flaring mouth-rim, and supported on short straight foot, painted around the exterior in rich cobalt blue tones, one side with a fan-shaped cartouche of boys in a terraced garden with stylised rockwork, two boys standing under a willow tree, the other side with sprays of pomegranate, lotus, peony, the shoulder with a continuous band of flowering branches set within double blue lines, the tall neck, with two bands, the lower painted with prunus, and the upper upright plantain pattern border, the bulb with a stylised floral motif, the base glazed. Period: 17th century. Height: 34,5 cm.
