A Chinese blue and white baluster vase with narrative design, hare mark, late Ming

- The Mr. and Mrs. Baert-Devos Collection, Belgium. Acquired from the above in 2011.
A globular jar, raised on a short foot and rising to a short neck with a gently flaring rim. The jar is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, the neck adorned with floral and diamond motifs. The shoulder is decorated with four floral cartouches, interspersed with alternating patterns in light and dark cobalt blue. The body is painted with a continuous scene depicting scholars and attendants carrying umbrellas in a garden setting with a pavilion. Below this scene, the lower body is decorated with a band of stylised scroll motifs. The glazed base carries a hare mark.
