A Chinese blue and white jar
Of ovoid form, the wide shoulder narrowing to a short and slightly inverted mouth rim, the body well-painted in vibrant shades of underglaze blue with an old gnarled tree bearing abundant hanging grapes, and sprigs of bamboo issuing from stylised rockwork, the mouth rim with a band of hatched triangle work, the base glazed, the later wood cover carved with scrolling tendrils between borders of meander work, the stand raised on five scroll feet, similarly decorated with carved scrolling tendrils and meander pattern. Period: Kangxi (1662 - 1722). Height: 21 cm.
The painting of grapes and tendrils on the present jar is based on a Yongle prototype from the 15th century.
