A Chinese blue and white seated figure of Wenchang, Wanli

- The Mr. and Mrs. Baert-Devos Collection, Belgium. Acquired from the above in 2000, accompanied by their certificate of authenticy and an Oxford Authentication Thermoluminescence Analysis report, dated 23 December 2004.

The figure is modelled seated on a plinth, wearing an official’s cap and a long robe loosely painted in underglaze blue. His right hand rests at the waist, while the left falls naturally across the knee. The decoration is simple and restrained, in keeping with late Ming blue and white porcelain figures.
Wenchang Dijun, also known as the God of Literature, is the deity associated with learning, civil examinations and scholarly achievement. From the Ming dynasty onwards, he was widely revered by scholars and was commonly depicted in the attire of a civil official.
