A Chinese famille rose armorial plate
Of round form with foliate rim, decorated in famille rose enamels, the front with scattered peony sprays below the arms of the Swedish family Grill in a gilt roccoco-shield set in acanthus and decorated with a crane, a further crane holding a branch in its beak atop the helmet, the gilt armorial decorated with a crane, a gilt band around the rim, the back glazed. Period: Qianlong. Diameter: 25 cm.
The Grill family were highly involved with the SOIC: four were directors of the Company. This service was most probably ordered in the 1760’s by Jean Abraham Grill (1736-1792), who was stationed in Canton for a number of years in the 1760’s as supercargo and later on became one of the directors of the Swedish East India Company.
