A Chinese silver bowl, Liao dynasty, 10th century

The bowl composed of six hammered, silver panels with a curving rim and low ring stand. The individual segments of the bowl with finely gilded engravings in the shape of birds amidst floral ornaments, the base with a continuous leaf décor, likewise gilt. Minor damage in places around the soldered joints. Diameter 20.5 cm, weight 323 g.
The Liao dynasty was a dynasty in the north of China that lasted from 916 to 1125. The ruling family and some of their subjects belonged to the Mongolian Khitan people. The dynasty was founded by Abaoji, who died in 926.
