A Chinese stoneware Cizhou 'lotus and chrysanthemum' baluster jar, Ming dynasty, the rounded body painted with dark brown on white slip with large lotus and chrysanthemum blossoms amongst leafy stems and smaller flowerheads, enclosed with decorative bands of larger spirals and tendrils at the shoulder and above the foot, 26cm high Provenance: with paper collection label to base that reads 'Lent by R.H. Benson Esq. No. 66 122'. Note: Robert Henry Benson (1850-1929) was a Trustee of the National Gallery from 1912, who collected paintings, particularly early Italian, and early Chinese ceramics. A member of the Burlington Fine Arts Club, Benson lent many works of art to public museums, such as the V&A prior to his major ceramics sale in 1924. c.f. 品相報告 Condition Report: A portion of the foot is missing, the surface polished. The exterior bearing areas of damage, including some grazes, deep scratches and chips with loss to the painted surface. The area around the foot bearing some loss of glaze, with chips to the underside of the footrim. Some areas with old hairlines emanating from some of these small chips to the surface.
