A Continental Silver-Mounted Hunting Hanger, Mid-18th Century, Silver Marks, Probably Swedish

With bright slightly curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point (some light pitting) and etched with a gilt stag leaping over foliage on both sides beyond the forte, the latter gilt and etched on one side with Samson wrestling the lion and labelled 'SIMSON' (sic), all between panels of foliage and whorls, and on the other with a Latin inscription in praise of Samson between similar panels, cast and chased hilt comprising downbent shell-guard with a sportsman at rest in a landscape within a border of foliage involving a hunting horn, all against a punched ground, quillon-block with a sporting scene on each side, lobed rear quillon with a stag's head on one side and foliage on the other, the forward quillon adapted from the original knuckle-guard, domed pommel-cap and collar each extended into the grip on one side and pierced with symmetrical foliage centred on an ovoidal panel chased with a stag and hound respectively, the pommel chased en suite, and horn grip of tapering circular section, in original wooden scabbard (minor damage) covered in brown leather with silver locket and chape en suite with the hilt, the former with fluted frog-button; together with a 1796 pattern sabre, the blade with traces of etched inscription and stamped '85' (surface rust patination overall, hilt with later gold paint, grip binding missing); a hunting knife with blade of Bowie type, one side with native American Indian above 'Defence' mark and stamped 'Warranted cast steel', brass-mounted hilt, and swelling ribbed wooden grip, in its leather sheath; and a large Corsican folding knife, the blade stamped 'Poudrille' on one side, and wooden grips, one painted with polychrome flower-heads (4)
