A FRENCH NEO-GREC ORMOLU MOUNTED BLACK MARBLE MANTLE CLOCK AND PAIR OF RELATED CANDLE STANDS, LONDON RETAILER, 1850-1875, the clock with an elegant kylix cup with curling tendril handles and thin gilt line incised details, on a shaped rectangular breakfront case centering a beading trimmed and glazed bezel opening to a gilt metal ring dial with black Roman hour chapters, enclosing gilt inscribed "DENT / 9 COCKSPUR ST / LONDON," above gun metal steel hands and twin key escapements, reversing to a hinged door opening to brass clockworks suspending a pendulum and stamped top left "116," and lower right "G.V / 44526 / 411," before a hammer strike wire gong, within exterior carved spandrels of gilt scrolling mythical beast and leafy stems over base spandrels of curled fruiting grape leaf and vines, above an acanthus leaf with pearl strand cast foot flanked by angled corner mounts cast as winged classical maiden's busts on scrolling brackets, raised on curling tipped palmette detailed feet, includes winding key, height: 18 1/2", width: 20", depth: 6 1/2"; together with a closely related pair of candle stands with conical tops on bulbous bodies mounted with flaring circular nozzles on fluted circular short stems issuing scrolling lion's masks suspending loop handles, above palmette ringed conforming bases elevated on breakfront rectangular bases centering winged classical maiden form scrolling brackets, raised on curling acanthus and paw feet, height: 15 3/4", width: 6 1/2", depth: 5". Provenance: Lacy and Helen Koonce, Sugar Land, Texas
Condition Report: Good condition with some scratches on the glazed bezel and dial, worn gilding on English retailer inscription, possibly worn areas of clear varnish leading to uneven surface shine, and some minor edge nicks. The candle stands probably had a multi-branched upper tree that would have fit into top nozzle but now lacking. Simpson Galleries does not guarantee any clock nor timepiece mechanism. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
