A Fine Chinese Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Box and Cover
Of round form, the slightly domed cover intricately carved with a scene of scholar and boy on a boat, in the foreground rocks and, in the background mountains and an old tree, all on a dense diaper pattern ground, the scene bordered by a band of flowering plants, and at the foot, a band of lappets enclosing trefoils on a ground of honeycomb diaper pattern, the interior and base lacquered black. Period: Qianlong (1735‑1796). Diameter: 17.5 cm.

Wladimir Simon Semcesen (1906‑1969) born in Austria Hungary, settled in Oslo, Norway in 1936. In the 1950’s and 1960’s before the Cultural Revolution in China, he acquired works of art in China that he brought back to Europe.
