A Fragment of the Kaaba Kiswa Textile.
Woven from deep crimson velvet and overlaid with intricate gold-silk thread, the textile features an unusual zigzag lattice of calligraphy. Within each diamond is the shahada (“There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”) and the names of the Rashidun caliphs in beautifully stylized thuluth script. The bordering bands are embroidered with Quranic invocations and praises to God in complementary linear script.
