[ translate ]

A GEORGE II BURR WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURYWith caddy moulded top and walnut veneered brushing slide79cm high, 88cm wide, 50cm deepProvenance: Private Collection, LondonFor a similar chest see Christie's, London, The Legend of Dick Turpin Part 1, 9th March 2006, Lot 13 (£13,200).For a remarkably similar chest of drawers but without a caddy moulded top, see Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antiques Collectors Club, 2009, page 105, plate 3:22. Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips and abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the extremities and edges with some replacements and losses. There is some old fading to the colour, most noticeably to the top. There are additional dark marks and scratches in some areas including to the top and to the slide. There are various old very dark ring marks and apparent old ink stains to the top in particular. The drawer handles and escutcheons all appear original. There are no alternate holes or marks to suggest otherwise. The small 'axe head' handles to the slide may be associated but appear to be 18th century. The locks appear to be of the period but possibly replaced as there are some cut indentations to the interior of the drawers overhanging the bottom of the locks. Lacking key(s)The drawer linings are oak, there are some splits and minor division between planks forming the floors of the drawers as expected for age. There is glued down thin paper lining to the drawers which is relatively easy to remove but some remnants of glue will remain to the underlying surface. The backboards are oak. The visible boards cover another layer of panels beneath. The underlying boards may be replacements. The visible boards may be the originals and appear to be of the period and have various old nail and screws holes throughout the edges. Some repairs to the feet including various veneer repairs and replacements of various size. There are replacements to the blocks underlying the feet also. There is evidence of old worm visible to the back of the legs and the back edge of the carcass. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition.
