A GEORGE II CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR CIRCA 1730 The reverse with a retailer's label 'John Ponzini & Son, Carvers, Gilders & Looking Glass Makers, Print Sellers & Mounters, 22 Hatton Garden, London' 79cm high, 52.5cm wide John Ponzini (fl. 1835 - 1871) conducted business at 73 Leather Lane in 1835 and 74 Leather Lane from 1837. John Ponzini & Sons were listed in the 1871 London Post Office Directory as carvers, gilders & looking glass makers, trading from 22 Hatton Garden, as confirmed by the label attached to the present lot. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits, some old repairs, comensurate with age and use. craqueleure/ lifting and some losses to the visible gilded surface. The gilding to the surface appears to be a later gild but has age. There is evidence of previous gilding beneath. Some lost areas of gilding have been touched in with gilding and/ or gold paint in relatively small areasThe mirror plate is hand bevelled. It bears expected depletion throughout (see images) however it may not display expected appearance to be entirely original, it may be an old replacement or was previously re-silvered. The rear panel to the mirror plate is a later replacement. It is probably 19th century. It bears to retailers label mentioned in the cataloguing.
