A GEORGE II WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1735 103cm high, 71cm wide, 74cm deep overall Provenance: Private Collection, LondonFor a related chair of the period incorporating similar out swept open arms, see Christie's, London, 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe, 23rd September 2010, Lot 83 (£10,000). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Timber elements with the expected old minor splits and chips. Some small losses. Some old repairs. Some fading and additional to the timber of the arms. Needlework with various old stitched repairs overall. Needlework appears to have previously been professionally cleaned. Elements of the needlework appear possibly to be 18th century but may be of a later date. It appears that very little or possibly none of the 18th century needlework remains. The needlework panels have possibly been re-applied to the chair, or is later associated. Significant elements of the needlework have been replaced or re-woven at a later date. There are some noticeabel holes and losses to the needlework (see images) and various areas of the woven elements lacking/ lost. There is later fabric to the reverse of the back and the brass studding is later. Dreweatts cannot guarantee the originality of elements beneath upholstery. Slight movement within the arms but the chair is structurally solid overall. Evidence of old worm to seat rails which appear to be original. There are later screwed in and glued corner blocks to the seats rails. There are later screws securing the 'ear' brackets at the tops of the legs. Some old worm holes to other areas of the timber. (see additional images) One rear leg has a spliced section of replacement (approximately half of the leg) . The other rear leg is very likely a later replacement. To one arm there is a later dowel/ peg joint visible from the top of the arm and securing its joint with the shaped vertical arm support. Throughout the tops of the arms and the and the sides of the arm supports there are old filled holes. The holes were likely as a result with securing fabric there previously. To the lower terminal of one arm support there are two later dowel/ peg joints securing the element to the seat rail. This has been coloured with a dark varnish/ stain. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
