A GEORGE IV SILVER TWO-PIECE COFFEE SERVICE, by James Charles Edington, London 1829, baluster form, the coffee pot cast with bark-effect spout, the domed hinged cover with flower stem finial, with double scroll wooden handle, raised on a stepped circular foot, engraved with presentation inscription to one side and the Woodgate family crest to the other; the cream conforming, the double C-scroll handle with leaf thumbpiece, gilded to interior. (2) Coffee pot 25.7cm high, 37.3 troy ounces gross Note: this service was presented to Canon Henry Arthur Woodgate, fellow and tutor at St John's College, Oxford, in 1830
Condition Report: Marks well spaced and well struck - coffee pot further struck with lion passant, conforming date letter and maker's mark to cover. Very minor wobble to cover hinge, but sturdy. Both stand upright, coffee pot stands square but rocking to foot of cream. Gilding to interior of cream is worn. A few very minor dings, together with light surface marks and scratches throughout commensurate with age and use. Presentation inscription reads: 'Henrico A Woodgate / Coll: Di: Jo: Bapt: Oxon / nuper tutori / boc gratae memoriae testimonium / D.D.D. / Discipuli / A.D. 1830.'
