A GILT BRASS CANDLESTICK BASE, NEAR EAST, 13TH-14TH CENTURY
The base of truncated conical form encircled by two pointed ridges, the projecting shoulder leading to a concave driptray. The body decorated with four cartouches with thuluth inscription on scrolling ground, divided by roundels containing floral lotus stems, a band of stylised leaf-motifs above and below.
Inscriptions:
al-maqarr al-kabir al-murabiti al-ali al-mawlawi al-maliki al-alami
(“High Authority, the Lordly, the Great Emir, the Conqueror, the Learned, the Possessor”).
Height 20 cm.
Diameter at the bottom 33 cm.
