A George III Gilt and Lacquered Tall Case Clock

[ translate ]

A George III Gilt and Lacquered Tall Case Clock

Late 18th/Early 19th Century

Height 86 x width 19 x depth 9 1/2 inches.
European Furniture & Decorative Arts
With pendulum, winding crank, case key and two lead weights. The case overall 18th century but with later paint and gilding; possibly merely re-touched or possibly entirely repainted. The retouching is more obvious at the corners of the case and on the gold work of the sides. The style of the decoration looks more 18th century on the door and the base of the case than on the sides and the rest of the case. Cracking, chips, flaking paint and wear to the painted surfaces throughout as is normal for age. The lock on the trunk door is replaced. The movement may not be original to the case, since there is alteration and later wood elements visible on the shoulder of the case. The movement winds, ticks and strikes when the hands are advanced, but has not been tested for duration or accuracy nor reviewed by a clock technician. The hands on the dial have been later blued.
