A George III carved giltwood oval mirror, circa 1765

[ translate ]

A George III carved giltwood oval mirror,
circa 1765

the later oval plate in an open scroll and open diaper filled frame, surmounted by a leaf carved pagoda crest, re-gilt, with trade label inscribed 'Robert Gaffikin / Carver & Gilder, / Looking Glass Manufacturer / Plate Glass Importer / No. 7 / Arthur Square / Belfast.'
approx. 156cm. high, 84cm. wide

Condition Report:
In overall good restored condition. Re-gilded and later plate as stated in cataloguing. The mirror plate in good condition, with very minor foxing towards the bottom. Minor craquelure, rubbing and losses to the gilding, consistent with age and use. As specified in the cataloguing, this has been re-gilt. There are signs of a break to the top central leaf, this has been repaired, some residual glue. It seems that the three leaf finials (the central one and the two lower ones) have been lightly re-attached securely at some point with glue, this is not very visible and definitely not distracting. Ready to place.

Provenance:
Almost certainly Mallett, 22 September 1994;
Property from a Knightsbridge Residence, sold Sotheby's London, Arts of Europe, 15 May 2014, lot 340.
