A George III mahogany and brass bound wine cooler or jardinière, circa 1780, of coopered construction, the stand base with square section legs, 53cm high, 64cm wide Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and useOld splits and cracks, some chips and lossesOverall solid and stableThe interior is not lined at present it is dry, unpolished mahogany, it almost certainly had a liner for use as either a jardinière or wine cooler - Dreweatts would recommend the purchaser sources a replacement before use as either of these things again. The coopering overall tight and not with large openings to the joints. Some old marks and stainingThere is no reason to doubt the originality of the handles, the top and base probably also are correct and not a later 'marriage'. There are tack marks to the top of the base where a baize liner may have been fitted to save scratching - the exposed timber is dry and unpolished and not supposed to be seen.
