A George V Art Deco sterling silver three-piece tea service, London 1931 by Charles Boyton

Comprising a teapot, a milk jug, and a twin handled sugar bowl. Each of hemispherical form upon a stepped circular foot with applied fluted motifs. The teapot with a cast shell form curved spout opposite a turned ivory C scroll handle pinned to tubular sockets. The hinged domed lid surmounted by a turned ivory knop finial. Each fully and part-marked. Each signed Charles Boyton underneath. (3)

Teapot length – 25.9 cm / 10 inches

Weight – 1423 grams / 45.75 ozt

The firm of Charles Boyton and Sons has its routes going back to 1809 producing general table silver of all kinds, the firm closed in 1933 when the then director Charles Boyton set up his own firm in Marylebone Lane. The pieces produced by him largely have a strong art deco design, utilising curved as well as geometric forms. His facsimile signature is known upon silver pieces from 1930 until 1947 when operations ceased. Boyton is particularly noted for several art deco tea sets.
