A German nautilus cup with silver-gilt mounts, Paul Solanier, Ausgburg, 1692-1697

on shaped-oval crimped base applied with cold-painted flower and foliage on copper wire, the centre painted with white and black scrolling foliage, the stem formed as a carved native wearing a silver palm-leaf skirt, supporting the nautilus, the shell applied with pearl-set branches of fruit and painted with foliage swags, the rim decorated with painted scrolls, the shell capped by acanthus leaves, the similar cover with wax bird finial
height 13 3/4 in.; 35 cm.

l'ombilic à décor peint de rinceaux en rappel sur le bord, appliqué d'un fil de cuivre polychrome formant fleurs et feuillages, le fût en bois peint noir en forme d'indigène, le nautile appliqué de fleurs et coquillages sur une guirlande de laurier peinte, le couvercle amovible avec prise en oiseau en cire
height 13 3/4 in.; 35 cm.

Condition Report:
The shell restored mainly on front. The wax bird in poor condition. The figure with traces of enameled on the loincloth. The terrace with traces of enamel. On leave missing on the top of the mounts. On the upper mounts are two holes probably made for a chain or an ornament. White enameled foliage ornaments worn on the nautilus border and foot.
Fully marks on foot.
Despite the quite poor condition, this piece is remarkable.
