A JAMES I OAK CREDENCE TABLE, CIRCA 1620

[ translate ]

A JAMES I OAK CREDENCE TABLE CIRCA 1620 With hinged top77cm high, 97cm wide, 46cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, LondonCondition Report: Table with marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Of cleaned and polished appearance. The top sits slightly awkwardly on the base, with supporting back leg not fitting flush against back rail- or with any sign of build up of wax/dirt around it. The turning of this back leg is also slightly different from the other legs. There has been discussion as to whether the top is 'right' for the base- and whether it may well be a later addition. It displays a clearly visible series of warping across the width- and with blacksmith style integral hinges. However the wood used- seems slightly incorrect in terms of colour/figuring (although this is hard to make out under the highly polished surface)The front drawer unusually has part of the moulding to the front edge attached. The feet have been removed below the stretcher level- but there seems to be little sign of wear to the lower edges of the stretchers. The underframe feels and looks to be mostly period- but the mouldings to the front are later. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
