A LARGE HENAN BLACK-GLAZED BOTTLE, SONG DYNASTY
China, 960-1279. The compressed globular body rising from a short broad foot to a conical shoulder with waisted neck and everted lip, covered in a lustrous black glaze stopping neatly above the foot, the slightly recessed base unglazed, revealing the dark buff body, with a hand-carved wood stopper.

Provenance: Old private estate in Lower Austria (see Expert's note). An Austrian private collector, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear and minor firing flaws, such as white spots, glaze recesses, and pitting, the base with minor chips, nicks, and scratches.

Expert's note: This lot was found in an estate in Lower Austria, where it had previously served as a petroleum container for many decades. The wooden stopper, entirely carved by hand, was added by these previous owners. As of this writing, the bottle still has a characteristic petroleum smell.
