A MASSIVE PAIR OF BRONZE BAROQUE FIGURAL GROUPS AFTER GIRARDON AND GIAMBOLOGNAthe large 19th century Italian bronze figural group of The Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto after the original by Francois Girardon (1628-1715), the three semi-clad figures intertwined in a dramatic pose, raised on a square, naturalistic base, dark brown patination, together with a matched figural group, Italian, 20th century, depicting the Rape of the Sabines after Giambologna (1529-1608), dark brown patination,101cm high and 104cm high respectively (2)Girardon's 'Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto' was a reinterpretation of Bernini's famous group of the same subject. The composition is arguably more complex, with a further figure added to the group which both increased the dramatic tension and demonstrated the sculptor's skill in carving such a complicated group in solid marble. The marble original was commissioned by Louis XIV for one of the four corners of the Parterre d'Eau, together with Boreas and Orytheia by Marsy, Saturn and Cybele by Regnaudin, and Nepture and Coronis by Tuby. The subjects were intended to reference the great Italian Baroque masterpieces of similar theme produced by Giambologna and Bernini, and to surpass their fame. Giambologna's Rape of the Sabines depicts the a legendary episode of Roman history, when the Roman men abducted the Sabine women, fighting off the Sabine men and forcing them to marry Romans. These subjects allowed the sculptors to produce dramatic, multi-figure nude groups, and the spiral composition meant that they can be viewed from multiple angles.
