A MEDIEVAL 13TH TO 14TH CENTURY LIMESTONE TURKS HEAD, FRENCH, CIRCA 1250-1350. A rare and unusual Limestone sculpture of a Turk , with flowing Keffiyeh, the face with drilled almond shaped eyes and drooping moustache, 31cm high 16cm wide 18cm deep 40cm high when on stand Though dressed in more Arabic style, in the Middle Ages and later renaissance period people from the East were more commonly known as Turks or Moors Literature - Anthony Wells-Cole, Art and Decoration in Elizabethan and Jacobean England - The Influence of Continental Prints, 1558-1625 . p.258 & p.260, fig 440. A large wall hanging embroidery at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. Depicting the Virtue Faith with the prophet Mahomet and background figures in a Moorish style building wearing Turkish style costume.
