A MYSTERIOUS AND LARGE 19TH CENTURY PAINTED TERRACOTTA HEAD...

[ translate ]

A MYSTERIOUS AND LARGE 19TH CENTURY PAINTED TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A DEVIL, DATED 1873 the grotesque head hollow inside and the eyes and mouth with holes, with large horns and a horny forehead, possibly representing a faun or the Green man, the inside inscribed 'John L.M.L ii V.on.V Theatre, London 1873', 38cm high x 69cm wide Despite much research we have not been able to ascertain which theatre the inscription pertains to. It has been suggested that this very unusual head may have been used as a stage prop or acting tool, perhaps a very strong man could place his head inside to play a part, hence the eyes that are drilled. Whether it depicts the Green Man, a satyr or the devil himself is as yet unconfirmed.
