A Napoleon III ebonised liqueur cabinet, probably by Paul Sormani, third quarter 19th century, the hinged cover and sides enclosing a lift-out calamander stand with gilt-bronze carrying handle, with four later glasses, the lockplate etched Rue Charlot, PARIS, 29cm high, 36cm wide, 28cm deep Provenance: The Geoffrey and Fay Elliot collection. Note: Born in the Kingdom of Lombardy, Venice, in 1817, Paul Sormani produced furniture and decorative objects, described by himself as "meubles de luxe". Operating from large premises at 114, rue du Temple and, from 1867, at 10, rue Charlot (the address on the current lot), he specialised in reproducing styles of the Louis XV and XVI eras. His creations were frequently exhibited and rewarded at the major international exhibitions of the 1860s and 70s.
