A Pair of Chinese Porcelain "Nine Peach" Vases, Tianquiping, Qianlong mark but probably late Qing dynasty, of ovoid form with cylindrical necks, painted in famille rose enamels with flowering and fruiting peach branches, the reverse with bats, six character mark in brown enamel, 54cm high See illustration
Provenance: Aldourie Castle, nr Inverness, Scotland and purchased by the vendor circa 2004
In Chinese mythology the goddess Xiwangnu owned a peach orchard and it was believed that anyone who ate fruit from this orchard would become immortal, so peaches are considered sacred and auspicious. Bottle vases of this type were produced during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods; Yongzheng examples depicting eight peaches, whilst those of Qianlong usually depict nine, nine being the highest Yang number and stands for eternity. Gifts of vessels depicting nine peaches therefore convey wishes for longevity and good fortune
