The lid engraved with a heraldic crest and motto SEQUAMUR, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms within a scrolled surround.
height 15 1/2in (39.5cm); width over handles 14 1/2in (37cm); depth 15in (38cm): gross weight approximately 183oz troy
Provenance: Property from the Estate of Ruth Harvey, Bel Air, California.

Footnote: The crest and motto for Oswald of Auchincruive (renamed Oswald Hall in 1927), Ayrshire, Scotland.
The arms are those of Oswald impaling those of Johnston.

Richard Alexander Oswald (1771 – 1841) inherited Auchincruive in 1819.
He married a celebrated beauty, Louisa, daughter of Wynne Johnston, in 1793. She was admired by Robert Burns, who made her the subject for his verse O Wat Ye Wha s in Yon Town. He was a Scottish Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1832 to 1835.
Condition Report: Fully marked to underside. Part marked to inner edge of lid and rim of warming cylinder. General marks, scratches, rubbing, spotting, tarnishing and wear. Softening to detail of engraving. Spigot collar probably replaced.
