A QAJAR ENGRAVED AND GOLD-DAMASCENED AXE (TABAR)
Iran, 19th century

With a crescent-shaped steel blade overlaid in gold (koftgari) with vegetal motifs all around the edges, closer to the mount on both sides a central engraved panel with five men, two smoking from a qalyan (water pipe) whilst the other three in the foreground sitting down and enjoying some rest from their daily activities, some tools highlighted in gold, cartouches of nasta'liq calligraphy both on the blade and on the edges of the head and mount, the shaft moulded with octagonal sections decorated with gold-damascened vegetal tendrils alternating with spirally fluted sections, a gold-overlaid pommel as finial, 78.3cm long.
