with rounded ends and sliding tray, decorated in polychrome and gilt with cartouches depicting a saint in prayer, figural scenes and landscapes, with roundels containing portraits of youths, the base of the penbox and sides of inner tray with scrolling foliate interlace

Comparable figures to that seen depicted in the centre top of the present lot have been identified as Christian saints in Khalili, Robinson & Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Part II, Oxford, 1997, pp. 39-41, cat. nos. 234, 235 & 236. Cat. 236 further contains a caption identifying the figure as John the Baptist.
