A Queen Anne Giltwood Side Chair
A Queen Anne Giltwood Side Chair
Circa 1710
the underside retaining a partial illegible retailer's paper label.
Height 39 1/2 x width 23 1/4 x depth 25 1/2 inches.
Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields European Furniture & Decorative Arts
Sturdy condition; can be sat upon. The upholstery is fine silk damask with nail heads, and in good condition with few if any stains. The gilding is not original; it has been re-gilded in the 20th century, but professionally and with proper burnishing. There are later braces added to the underside, probably in the 19th or early 20th century. There are areas of the gold which are brittle and beginning to flake off, with some of the chips present in a plastic bag. One or two of the feet have probably been repaired, with newer wood having been added (visible from the bottom) and areas probably re-built with gesso around the feet. Some of the gesso has crumbled off and one of the back legs has a detached section of it's pad foot, section is retained. Seat is stuffed with horsehair.
