A RARE AND FINE 18TH CENTURY NEAPOLITAN GOLD PIQUE AND MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID BOXthe tortoiseshell snuff box of rectangular form with canted angles, the top inlaid with a scene of a noblewoman presenting a king with an urn, a palace in the background, within a gold pique border, the reverse inlaid with a mother of pearl depiction of a castle flanked by pique floral stems and a lake, with silver mounts,8cm wide x 5.3cm deepThis lot is subject to CITES and will require a permit to leave the UK, due to the tortoiseshell.Catalogue Note:During the second quarter of the 18th century, a small number of highly skilled Neapolitan craftsmen were producing objects of vertu of this type in tortoiseshell pique; including della Torre and Gennaro Sarao. The works that they produced were highly prized, exquisite objects, decorated with rare and precious materials such gold, mother of pearl, pewter and tortoiseshell. The present box probably dates to around 1740-50, when snuff boxes tended to be of rectangular form rather than shell formed or round. Examples of gold pique, morther of pearl and tortoiseshell snuff boxes of this type can be found in the collections of the Louvre, the Wallace Collection and the Cognac-Jay Museum.Related Literature: A. Kugel 'Pique', Rizzoli, New York. Ill. 49 shows a coffer attributed to Sarao, with similar mother of pearl scrolling foliate inlay. P.58 shows a tortoiseshell box also with similar decoration.
