A RARE AND UNUSUAL ELIZABETHAN OAK LOW SEATED BACKSTOOL CHILDS CHAIR, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1580-1600. With moulded uprights joined by an acanthus arcaded top rail with deep fluted carving and twin quatrefoils to the corners, above a twin panel back with single board seat joined by moulded rails on inverted baluster turned legs. The back with further moulding and chamfered panel edges, the lower rail stamped with owner/inventory initials A B . 94cm high, 44.5cm wide, 37.5cm deep NB. Bespoke children s furniture of the 16th and 17th centuries are scarce survivals, this low chair or true Backstool is a sophisticated example in a rarely seen format.
