A RARE DENSATIL STYLE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF MAHAKALA
China. Presenting as Legden, "the Excellent One", wearing a heavy cloak and boots redolent of indigenous Tibetan spirit deities, a rare form of the deity. Traces of paint.

Condition: Good condition with only one of the pegs lost, some minor abrasion to the gilt.
Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Weight: 5,740 g.
Dimensions: Height 29.7 excl. the base and pegs.

Associated modern wood base. (2)

This rare form of Mahakala was favoured in Central and Southern Tibet under the Newari artistic influence during the 13th and 14th century. Compare an almost identical figure from Densatil (HAR12127), other examples of Mahakala similarly clad in heavy cloak include two in the Rubin Museum of Art (HAR65443, 65208).
