A RARE MID 18TH CENTURY DUTCH LONGCASE CLOCK WITH AUTOMATON AND CALENDARthe case of burr walnut with chequered stringing, the hood with a shaped pediment and foliate cresting, with a panel of blind fretwork and two freestanding columns flanking the break-arch door, the sides with pierced fretwork, the trunk with glass lenticle with ornate mount depicting Europa and the Bull, raised on a bombe plinth base with marquetry inlay over two large paw feet, the brass dial painted with a scene of Juno and Jupiter seated in chariots, with a pair of putti below lifting a curtain to reveal a scene of Saint George riding a horse in the sky to rescue a maiden from a sea monster, with a seascape in front with numerous ships, and Triton riding a chariot pulled by horses, the waves and ships all moving with the ticking of the clock (mechanism requires some attention), with a harbour town to the right and numerous figures on the shore line watching the dramatic scene unfold, the silvered Roman chapter ring signed 'JAN BERNINCK AMSTERDAM', and with Arabic five minute markers, the engraved brass centre with a moonphase below a dial for days of the week, and a dial for month of the year, each silvered dial engraved with a different figure, centred by a seconds dial, the weight driven movement with a rod attached to the automaton mechanism below, with anchor escapement, striking on two bells,246cm highFootnote:Jan Bernink is recorded in Baillie, G.H.
