A rarely seen variation signed by George Caleb Bingham in graphite lower left, hand colored mezzotint engraving proof, the lower margin with letterpress title and text including 'Martial Law' 1872, publisher Geo. C. Bingham & Co. Columbia & Kansas City Missouri, further inscribed lower center 'Dedicated to the Friends of Civil Liberty by the Publishers', 'Proof' lower right.

Also known as Order No. 11, this composition is based on the original painting by George Caleb Bingham, now in the collection of the State Historical Society of Missouri.

Order No. 11 was a Union army directive issued in 1863 during the Civil War throughout various rural areas of Missouri forcing the evacuation of residents regardless of sympathies.

Image size 21.5 x 30.5, the frame measures 32 x 42.5 inches.

Condition Report: Apparently the condition is very good, intact, no damage, repair, punctures or tears. There are areas of toning lower left visible in the margin and two points of foxing lower right margin. This work has not been examined outside the frame.
