A RENAISSANCE MAP, "Typus Orbis Terrarum," ABRAHAM ORTELIUS, ANTWERP, 1587-1612, hand colored copperplate engraving on paper, a fragment from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the "first modern world atlas," compiled and published by cartographer Abraham Ortelius (Barbantian 1527-1598), plate engraving attributed to Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), showing a view of the known world including major cities, churches, rivers, geographical elevations, overlaid with latitude and longitude lines, the world enclosed by profusely fruiting, swag, garland, masks and birds issued from scrollwork.
