Pahlavi Iran, 20th century
Of identical rectangular format, each with an ancient mythical Persian king's idealised portrait: Bahram, Bahman, Hormoz, Shahrazad, Lohrasb, Shirouyeh, each identified in black in nasta'liq script, within elaborate triple borders of cobalt blue, yellow, and woven black bands against the white glazed ground in European style, the kings in ancient Persian robes, diadems and headpieces, the costumes and weapons in colour, the faces in grisaille, possibly reflecting contemporary tinted lithographs of popularised pre-Islamic iconography, the corners with moulded floral clusters in polychromes, 37cm x 28cm each.
