A South German, probably Nuremberg parquetry worked, oak and walnut cabinet on chest, second quarter 18th century,: both elements with arc-en-arbelette serpentine fronts, the upper section with a pediment drawer flanked by serpentine spandrels, above a door and an arrangement of nine further drawers, all with walnut, fruitwood and ebonised zig-zag parquetry panels, the sides with lozenge parquetry panels, above a serpentine lower edge to short, stylised cabriole legs; the entirely conforming lower section with three drawers, all with corresponding parquetry decoration, each with twin gilt brass swing handles, with corresponding lozenge parquetry sides, on stylised cabriole legs; 176cm high overall, 118cm wide, 70cm deep * Notes In form this is very similar to other South German examples of the period. The restrained inverted serpentine front, the controlled meandering apron underside and the short cabriole legs all feature fairly typically, -cf Christie's South Kensington, English and Continental Furniture, Tapestries and Works of Art, 18th September 2002, lot 380 *Provenance. Purchased in Nuremburg in the later 19th century by the Hon. Eleonora Anstruther (née Chetwynd). After which the cabinet on chest passed to her sister, the Hon. Katharine Frances Blezard (née Chetwynd), -these the daughters of Richard Walter Chetwynd, 7th Viscount Chetwynd of Bearhaven. Then by descent through Ruth Gladys Barnes (née Blezard) to Olivia Staughton (née Barnes) and to her son and daughter in law, the current owners. At various points during this family's ownership, the cabinet on chest is known to have been at;- Hungerdown House, Upper Seagry, Wiltshire; Kensington Park Gardens, London; The Old Rectory at Latimer, Bucks; Sloane St, London; and finally Hill Farm, Boconnoc, Lostwithiel, Cornwall.
