A South German wheellock rifle from the armoury of the princes of Salm-Reifferscheidt, dated 1649

Description: The octagonal barrel slightly constricted in the middle with smooth bore in 17 mm calibre. Dovetailed sights with folding rear sight, the date "1649" stamped on the top of the barrel. The mark "IS" with a key struck in two places at the root of the barrel. Smooth lock with external wheel, the mark repeated on the lock plate. The spring-loaded pan cover with a release button, set trigger. The walnut full stock with a pattern of finely chiselled scales. Inlays of engraved and blackened bone (the front ramrod sleeve well replaced) with depictions of different animals, leaping stags, wolves, hares and hounds, on the butt and the side opposite the lock. The lid of the patch box with an allegorical female figure and the date "1650". The butt cap in green horn, engraved with the number "33". Original wooden ramrod with engraved bone tip and threaded iron sleeve. The bottom of the butt stamped with the armoury mark of the princes of Salm-Reifferscheidt, together with the number "6", a brass collection number attached. Length 107.5 cm. The fine, early baroque wheellock rifle in good, arsenal-maintained condition.
