A St Petersburg porcelain salt from a subsequent order for the Andreas service

Moulded inswept salt dish with two hollows. With gotzkowsky mouldings, painted with the Russian double headed eagle and the cross of the Order of Saint George. Green stamped mark AII beneath a crown, incised I. H 6.8, W 18.2, D 12 cm.

Literature

The subsequent order to the service originally delivered by Meissen in 1745 on occasion of the marriage of Karl Peter Ulrich von Holstein-Gottorf (later Tsar Peter III) and Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst (later Tsarina Catherine the Great) is mentioned in cat.: Meissen für die Zaren, Munich 2004, p. 68. The St Petersburg copies of the salts are first mentioned in the inventory of the Hermitage in 1885. There were two variations of the decor: One with gilt lace (160 pieces) and one with simple gilt rims (247 plates).
