A Tibetan fire-gilt bronze repoussé plaquette with a Dalai Lama. Early 19th century

A powerful figure, wrapped in multiple layers of fine robes, seated en face on a large pillow-seat. His left hand on his lap, holding dharmachakra (wheel of karma), his right hand in vitarkamudra, holding the stem of a lotus plant, flowering at his shoulder, carrying pustaka, shankha and a sword. He wears traditional for the Gelug school pandita hat, following the iconography of Tsongkhapa. His countenance carries a strict expression, provided by the frowned eyebrows. Rests of red pigment.

The figure probably represents the 8th Dalai Lama, Jampal Gyatso (1758-1804).
